Ethical – The Regal Way

In the mid-1980s, Rudi Lamprecht began farming catfish in the pristine lakes of Java. He saw it as a way to help the impoverished communities of Java while making a decent income. He believed that a for-profit business could do it better than government aid. He envisioned his farm providing opportunity for individuals to create dignified livelihoods and to express themselves with creativity and purpose. The catfish, however, did not survive in the clean, cool waters of Java. After two years of failure, Lamprecht discovered Tilapia, which had become endemic throughout the tropical world as a food staple, but was still largely unknown as a commercial fish. Lamprecht’s Tilapia thrived and he has subsequently pioneered virtually all elements of the business. His innovation and willingness to explore new technologies led him to move production to floating cages in deep lakes.

Rudi’s idea was a success and soon, production outpaced sales. Regal Springs began to look for new markets, including the United States, where it eventually landed its first large food service contract. Over the last 25 years, Tilapia has gone from a virtually unknown fish in the USA to the 4th most consumed seafood item after shrimp, salmon and tuna. The growth story has continued ever since, not without struggles, but always with a commitment that has remained true to Rudi Lamprecht’s vision of helping others.

Today, Regal Springs has grown to become the world’s largest vertically integrated aquaculture company and employs over 8,500 people. Rudi and his daughter Magdalena lead the company and continue the family’s mission of producing the world’s best Tilapia while empowering fish-farming communities with economic and social development as an alternative to non-profit aid.

When the people and communities who bring you Regal Springs Tilapia are healthy, happy and successful, the fish they produce for you are the best in the world. As a family owned business Regal Springs is committed to that understanding. People are more strongly committed to a shared goal when they feel the benefits of achieving that goal right in their homes and communities. That is why with your support, Regal Springs continue to commit to making where they live and work, in Indonesia and other countries, better places.
